Research on perspective-taking and embodied cognition
This line of research focuses on studying the cognitive interface between language and spatial representation. To this end, we analyze the processes involved in taking the reader's geographical perspective during the comprehension of displacements that may or may not be consistent with a particular perspective. Based on the modulations of several ERP components—N1, P2, P3, and N400—we demonstrate that geographical perspective-taking occurs incidentally during ordinary comprehension, producing similar geographical coherence effects for both self-perspective (second-person narratives) and the perspective of others (third-person narratives).
To explore the nature of the inhibitory processes involved, we employed a dual-task paradigm combining a Go/No-Go task with the comprehension of affirmative and negative sentences. Applying time-frequency analyses, we found that the increase in theta power (4–7 Hz) elicited by No-Go trials is modulated by negative sentences. We conclude that a widespread inhibitory mechanism is likely at work in the comprehension of negation.
