Participation in the International Web Conference on Empathy in Healthcare Practice

June 6, 2025 – Global Day of Empathy

With the occasion of the celebration of the World Day of Empathy, the teacher Naira Delgado Rodríguez, Department of Psychology, Cognitive, Social, and Organizational of the University of la Laguna, was invited as a speaker opening in a web conference international organised by the Gruppo Italiano Felicità e Salute Positive (GIFSP), in collaboration with the ASL Toscana Nord Ovest (Italy).

His intervention opened the day with an updated review of the scientific literature on the role of empathy —especially in its cognitive dimension— as a protective factor against burnout in health professionals. Professor Delgado Rodriguez emphasized that empathy is not an automatic response, but rather a conscious choice and trainable, it strengthens the bond between the professional and the patient, and contributes to the quality and safety of care.

The event, under the general title of “Cultivating empathy for better attention” brought together experts from various areas —health, training and education— that discussed topics such as:

  • gender differences in the expression empathetic,

  • empathy as a tool to improve the professional well-being,

  • their impact on the quality of care,

  • their role in education and in family dynamics,

  • and the critical relationship between empathy and burnout.

The day was consolidated as a space for interdisciplinary dialogue, promoting deeper reflection on how to integrate empathy and structural contexts of care.
